Rethink Your Drink
HEAL of Washington County wants to inspire our community members to “rethink” many of their popular drink choices as a way to improve their health. People often don’t realize how many of their daily calories and large amounts of added sugar are coming from these beverages. Water is the best choice as staying well hydrated keeps your body functioning at its best.
Sugar adds up! Did you know that the average American consumes 22 teaspoons per day of added sugar, which equals 350 extra calories? The truth is, you may not realize how many extra calories you are adding to your diet through beverages alone, but the consequences are serious. These added calories from sugary drinks increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and gout. Read labels and be sure to pay attention to serving size, calories, and sugar content. There is no nutritional need or benefit for added sugar in our diet.
Are you up for The Challenge?
We hope you are! Anyone can take the challenge. Participants will be asked to track the amount of water they drink for 4 weeks with the ultimate goal of drinking 64 ounces of water per day. Here are a few ways to take the challenge:
- Take the challenge anytime on your own by downloading our tracking sheet and reducing the amount of sugary beverages you consume.
- Encourage your workplace, organization or community to take the challenge! HEAL has provided a Rethink Your Drink Turn Key toolkit for your group with helpful materials and motivation to use throughout your challenge. Consider challenging another group to match your healthy efforts!
MOTIVATE. HYDRATE. FEEL GREAT.
If you’re worried about making the switch to water, try infusing your water with a few healthy ingredients to help you enjoy drinking it more! Fresh fruit and herbs add flavor for delicious water with a twist!
